X-Files: Fight The Future is the X-files at its zenith in pop culture status for better or worse. It explores the Mulder-Scully dynamic within the trappings of the bombastic but unwieldy and incoherent mythology. It consists of themes and subtexts of colonization, anti-authoritarianism, female body violation, and cynicism in the post-Cold War era.
The Mulder-Scully dynamic is explored with formulaic yet meaningful arcs coupled with solid acting. However, it's undercut by clumsy exposition brought by incoherent plot mythology, and plot devices trivializing its lead character. Overall X-Files: Fight The Future is effective and simple storytelling and the template for feature film adaptations of television shows.
X-Files: Fight The Future is a cinematic adaptation of the X-Files with perfect calibration. There's scale and scope with on-location filming. The expansive set- design conveys the scale of this film. The practical effects of the alien body-horror sequences are grotesque and convey a sense of terror. Peppered with intercuts, inerts, and moody lighting it gives a personal noir look.
The frenetic and kinetic editing keeps the film riveting and thrilling harkening to 70's thrillers. Effects are used on Alien puppets combining practical and cutting-edge effects sequences. Overall X-Files: Fight The Future is a solid big-budget expansion of the show's themes and its central dynamic encapsulating the show at its best and worst.
