The Substance is visceral. Its high-concept body horror is simplistic yet rich with symbolism. Some might complain about the bluntness of themes on self-hatred, identity, and female objectification however leads to rich commentary. The script conveys rules, minimal dialogue, tension, and appropriate setup/payoff.
The gonzo energy drives the film with its black humor. The juxtaposition of our protagonists drives the tension leading to compelling character development. The committed acting conveys layers, nuance, black satire, and physicality. Overall The Substance is the perfect package of body horror and biting humor.
The Substance blends surrealist horror with satire for a vibrant tone. The surreal imagery conveys heightened emotions and depth. The dynamic editing comprises loud inserts, smash cuts, and montages. Distorted sound inserts and non-diegetic sound make an impressive soundscape.
The electronic score complements the heightened imagery and aggravates the horror. The drab and broken production design juxtaposes the protagonists's arcs. Casting combines new stars and older fame(particularly Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley). The effects comprise makeup, prosthetics, gore, and blood. Hence,The Substance is an artistic gem.
