As a Scandinavian riff on Hamlet, The Northman is an esoteric and exciting blockbuster. Combining themes of revenge, trauma, and predestination, it interrogates hyper-masculinity and its justification for revenge and bloodshed. Meanwhile, the seemingly straightforward plot works on dream logic and surreal sequences steeped in Norse mythology.
It has a defined cast of characters who have nuanced motivations and are well-realized. There's hyper-surrealism, twists, setup/payoff, symbolism and consequences. The acting conveys range, and chemistry and services the themes. Hence the Northman is an esoteric Viking blockbuster that remains exciting and fresh.
The Northman juxtaposes mythological surrealism with the harsher lived-in world. The psychedelic imagery utilizes stark lighting, moody framing, and precise movement. The tight pacing builds urgency and stakes. Risers, combat, and smash cuts dominate the propulsive soundscape.
. The authentic music is a period piece accurate with Siberian drums and Mongolian chants. Its craggy and authentic production design employs claustrophobic spacing and nomadic lived-in world-building. The cast is recognizable and remains a household name. The effects consist of prosthetics, makeup, costumes, blood, and gore. Overall the Northman is a technical accomplishment.
