Remixing tales of legends, epics, and folktales The Lighthouse synthesizes into a story of descent into madness. Themes of isolation, self-destruction, homosexuality, fragile masculinity, and repressed sexual desire are intrinsic in this folktale.
Both protagonists convey complex motivations that drive them to their tragic fates. There's setup/payoff, tension, layers, and range. The two-hander performance brings range, and emotion and complements each other. Overall The Lighthouse synthesizes character drama with horror efficiently.
Technically The Lighthouse is a skillful production. The direction conveys a horror yet philosophical tone detailing their madness. The orthochromatic cinematography with motion, and lighting conveys the gritty and macabre aspect efficiently.
Flashbacks, smash cuts, and surrealism are employed in the methodical editing. Atmospheric sounds, low-subharmonics, foghorn sounds, and voiceovers contribute to a gritty, idiosyncratic, and immersive soundscape.
The stringless score combined with the atmospheric sound is restrained yet perfectly represents the mood. Its cast while small contains fame and star power. The effects are primarily used for makeup, blood and prosthetics. Overall The lighthouse is technically robust and sturdy.
