Shaun Of The Dead is influential in the horror comedy genre. It has clever twists subverting expectations, and flippant visual gags interwoven with well-written characters subverting caricatures with depth and personality. Its parody isn't condescending but elevates this genre and makes its own mark and style. It has clear setup and payoff with clever bits of foreshadowing but based on a character- driven study of Shaun and his sidekick. It's themes of growing up and coming of age are sincere and poignant.Overall it's a well crafted and efficient story elevated by a filmmaker clearly hitting his stride.
Simon Pegg and Nick Frost are an incredible duo with great comedic skills and it dazzles this film with their wonderful chemistry. Technically this film is sublime. It's filled with smash cuts, quick paced edits for visual gags, dutch angles, dreamy sequences, pop needle edits for songs giving to layered comedy( Queen's). It's practical production design gives it an horror edge(zombies and the ghost town)acting as a credible threat. The sound is servicable but acts as a juxtaposition to this entire film giving it a layered comedy. Overall Shaun Of The Dead is a perfect zombie comedy film with its integration of other genres and perfect execution and the start of a great trilogy.
