Robert Eggers's Nosferatu

ree

Robert Eggers' Nosferatu is a study of the eccentricity that intrudes upon civilized society. It conveys themes of sexual politics, religion, and the occult. Here we see characters abandoning civilized worlds for worlds that remain at the edge of civilization. The psychedelic horror stems from the lack of understanding of something that civilized humanity cannot comprehend.

Eggers's Nosferatu exists in a conversation about sexual liberation with gendered roles. We see Count Orlok being a sexually repressed figure who desires sexuality from Ellen. It conveys a society that refuses to understand or cope with liberated sexual ideas, mental illness regarding women. Hence Robert Eggers's Nosferatu is a culminating point thematically with crashing the eccentric upon a civilized Victorian society.

Technically Nosferatu looks Gothic. The pale-pastel colors with shadows inform the rich yet textured cinematography. The direction conveys mood, horror, and scale, and guides the film. The accurate production design evokes the Victorian mood while juxtaposing with the Gothic and occult of the horror.

The casting conveys star power with breakout roles(Lily-Rose-Deep). The visual effects include blood, gore, makeup, and prosthetics that accentuate the horror. The sound employs uncanny noise, silence, and split cuts that enhance the mood. The score is mournful, haunting, and ethereal. Overall Nosferatu is a dark mythic fairy tale. It's a highlight.
