Last Night in Soho in Soho is an atmospheric horror that relies on tension while juggling a coming-of-age movie. It wears its influence on its sleeve but provides inventive and creative means around it. It comprises of dreams, thrills, and invests. Its urban London location juxtaposes the character-driven struggle for Ellie(Thomasin Mckenzie).
It's slick, fun, and stylish with Wright's trademark for music needle drops. However the payoff doesn't land, the mystery peeters out and the final act is a convoluted mess. However Last Night in Soho retains its potency through informed and sincere performances with meta-horror.
On a technical level, Last Night In Soho is dazzling. Its pink classic British aesthetic gives room for atmospheric tension while its neon aesthetic gives it seediness and violence. The imagery uses lighting, framing, and composition.
Its music features classic 60's music, eerie atmospheres, and motifs.
Its sound adds stings, creepy voiceovers, ambiance, and match cuts. The production design is gothic, surreal, historic with detailed period piece sets and drenched in pink and neon landscapes. The editing provides dream sequences ,insets and structure. Overall Last Night in Soho is lush with style but misses the mark on substance
