Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2 is a soulful blockbuster. Vol. 2 updates the generational tension of Star Wars and interrogates the idea of reconciliation. Themes of parental abuse, colonialism, humanity, and redemption are explored through streamlined arcs. It's a well-honed blockbuster.
Themes of parental and child abuse are explored in Peter Quill's arc through his relationship with Yondu and Ego. Ego, being the antagonist, is driven by perfectionism and colonizing worlds, superseding human love. Essentially, Ego is a commentary on the power fantasy that permeates superhero culture.
Ego talks about power and responsibility, but justifies his actions by wielding power, justifying genocide. This is horrific. Yondu is an imperfect parent who's ostracized by his family and comes to terms with his mistakes. It's a poignant arc with a committed performance by Michael Rooker.
Parental abuse is reflected in Gamora and Nebula's arcs. Both have been abused by Thanos, hence inflicting the cycle of abuse on one another. Through forgiveness and vulnerability, they let go of the cycle of abuse and earn redemption.
Peter Quill's arc sees him come to terms with his flaws, come to terms with his parental disconnect, and find a way back to his humanity. His arc seems to be an interrogation of Luke's arc from Return Of The Jedi, with Luke letting Vader off the hook and avoiding reconciliation. However, Vol. 2 suggests that reconciliation must come from both parties.
Ego naturally sees Peter as a mere tool and extension of himself. However, the film's climactic reconciliation comes between Yondu and Peter Quill, with both of them coming to terms with their own flaws. Overall, GOTG Vol 2 is a celebration of one's own value and provides a striking update on the generational tension within the Star Wars franchise.
Technically, GOTG Vol. 2 is bombastic. Its direction maintains a heightened tone, dabbling in comic-book surreality. The flashy editing contains slow motion, match cuts, montage, dolly zoom effect, and bolsters the frenzied pacing. Risers, explosions, combat, and diegetic sound contribute to an impressive soundscape.
The bombastic score blends orchestral pieces with 70s vintage pop-rock, lending to the space opera feel. The dazzling visuals with sweeping panoramas contribute to a huge scope and a sweeping spectacle. The cast consists of household names alongside stunt casting choices.
The CGI-laden effects contribute to the scope and scale of the film. It consists of prosthetics, makeup, alien environments, fur shapes, and an eye rig. Overall, GOTG Vol 2 is a technical triumph that contains substance.
