Final Destination is existential horror fiction that marries high-concept ideas with slasher sensibilities. However, it's marred by generic teen archetype characters that are insensitive to elaborate and inventive deaths. It dabbles in themes of existentialism and trauma but never explored deeply opting for a conventional slasher formula.
There's exposition-ridden and teen angst dialogue, nonsensical plotting, and archetypal characters being cannon fodder. Overall Final Destination is inventive in its concept but relies on stock horror tropes and horror cliches.
Technically Final Destination relies more on mood and atmosphere. The imagery guides lighting, POV's and composition. The production design combines grounded practical design with heightened CGI for a slasher feel. Split cuts, dissolves, crosscuts, and jump cuts are employed for flashy editing that fixates on gratuitous violence.
Ambiance, action, and split cuts amplify the genre-driven sound. Its cast consists of genre actors but lacks star power. Overall Final Destination is an adequate horror thriller with a precursor to the 9/11 2000s horror.
