Everything Everywhere ALL At Once is full of multiverse shenanigans but incorporated to the plot in a meaningful way. It is a stylistic movie made with substance and clever direction. Its sweeping ideas are balanced by interpersonal human drama in a meaningful way which feels true to the setting and the tone of this movie.
The movie holds a delicate balance between different tones and styles through elegant direction and synchronised editing with creative camera angles. The tonal balance is balanced astonishingly well. The Daniels have a knack at creating creative high concept ideas and knocking them out of the park with stellar execution. The editing by Paul Rogers is commendable and is a glue which keeps the movie together.
The acting performances by Michelle Yeoh and Stephanie Shu with the mother-daughter dynamic is powerful yet elegant. It is a layered dynamic filled with nuance across different universes. Key Hu Quan is a lot of fun with his role and having to be different versions of the same character and he brings a lot of sensibility into this movie. James Hong as the older father is quirky with the different roles to plays throughout the movie.
The sci-fi ideas presented in this movie are surprisingly high concept but do not overwhelm you or hit you on the head about it but are explored through a bittersweet family dynamic. It isn't self-serious with his ideas but has fun with them and that balances it out in a satisfying manner. The Daniels gleefully embrace this chaos instead of overexplaining these ideas and are left for the viewer's imagination.
Overall this film has style with substance and balanced diligently through visionaries like The Daniels brothers and one of the best A24 movies which feels original and fresh.
