Bojack Season 4 is one of the best seasons of the adult animation genre. It's a towering achievement for this show and its storytelling quality.
Bojack season 4 starts on an optimistic note with Mr. Peanutbutter going up against the fictional American president for the elections which starts as a farce but then balloons into a national spectacle with the media blowing it up. It feels oddly prescient with the idea of an egoistical, charismatic figure entering into a political race for his shallow goals in a post-Trump era.
After the opening we see the show take a turn to darkness with this season being the most focused on Bojack, Bojack's family, and his legacy with the addition of Hollyhock( Bojack's apparent estranged daughter) . This season is driven by its themes of self-discovery, redemption, forgiveness, identity, and compassion.
Here are the episodes I would like to highlight for this season
The Old Sugarman's Place: A tragic tale of Beatrice Horseman juxtaposing with Bojack's current predicament and setting up her redemption arc in this season which gives depth to Bojack and his family while coming to terms with Sarah Lynn's death. It's a brilliant tale of grief, manipulation, shame and a lack of compassion.
Ruthie: A phenomenal Princess Carolyn episode that brings a lot of depth to her character and arc throughout the show. The episode begins with an interesting framing device that builds intrigue and delivers a heartbreaking ending for Princess Carolyn with her aims crumbling down but still being earnest and raw in its portrayal of working women.
Time's Arrow: My fav episode of the whole show. This episode is a surreal masterpiece while delivering hard-hitting character-driven drama. It concludes Beatrice's redemption arc in the show by showing a sympathetic side to her and her relationship with Bojack. It's a show with clever usages of flashbacks and interesting storytelling devices.
What Time is it right now: It is a fantastic season finale for an amazing season with brilliant character dramas and great payoffs for our characters (Bojack and Hollyhock). This season's focus on Bojack having a terrible family life gives this finale a lot of emotional weight with Bojack and Hollyhock connecting as loved ones giving a truly satisfying ending to their respective arcs.
Stupid Piece Of Shit: It's a great story focusing on mental illness and depression and how a person remains bound by it. A thought-provoking story done in an experimental form with bizarre CG animation to convey Bojack's self-loathing thoughts makes it a winner for this season.
