Non -spoiler thoughts
Blade Runner Final Cut is a Ridley Scott masterpiece. It is a thought-provoking movie that questions the humanity of humans or replicants i.e non-humans which is compelling. The direction is great and the cinematography by Jordan Cronenweth is stunning with a gothic aesthetic. This movie has a grounded look to it despite living in a future and fantastical world. It is a sci-fi gem in our cinematic history. The soundtrack by Vangelis is eerie and fits the gothic and disturbing tone of this movie. The acting is absolutely strong across the board by Harrison Ford's Deckard, Sean Young as Rachel, Rutger Hauer as Roy Batty, Joanna Cassidy as Zohra, Joe Turkel as Eldon Tyrell. Rutger Hauer's performance is bone-chilling and frightening and his tears of the rain monologue are heartbreaking and made me teary-eyed during the climax.
It has a noir-detective feel to it when we see Harrison Ford try to 'retire' the replicants. My take is that Harrison Ford's Blade Runner is the antagonist of this movie and Roy Batty is the protagonist of this movie as he is doing questionable things for his and the other replicant's benefits and how to increase their lifespan. The climax between Roy and Deckard is a thrilling cat and mouse chase with a clever twist by Roy saving Deckard. Johanna Cassidy as Zhora is haunting and chilling to your bone and the acting is solid and their fight was pretty good. The relationship between Deckard and Rachel played by Sean Young has amazing chemistry. Rachel is instrumental for Deckard's arc and Deckard's choices are based on Rachel. Deckard's character goes from a cold-blooded killer to a more caring person who looks at replicants with humanity and compassion.
The pacing is a bit slow for my taste but it works later on in the movie. The worldbuilding is deep and richer and is a futuristic yet grounded feel to it. The piano scene was incredible with Harrison Ford and Sean Young's chemistry and Sean Young sells the audience as a replicant for her performance. It is brutal and does not hold back from the violence and gore in the movie but it does not overdo it too. The climax is open-ended and leaves u off with the popular question that whether Deckard is a replicant or not. The ending is ambiguous and I appreciated it a lot than the studio-imposed theatrical cut happy ending which is contrary to the mood of this movie.
Closing thoughts :
Overall Blade Runner Final cut is a well-crafted thought-provoking masterpiece that is timeless for cinema and future generations will appreciate it more in the years to come.
Nice write up. I totally agree.
