BLACK PANTHER(2018)

ree

Black Panther is an outlier in the MCU, if not radical and not as subversive. Driven by the formulaic structure of the MCU, however, it conveys themes of isolationism, collectivism, legacy, responsibility, anti-colonialism, Black identity, and existentialism.

Black Panther understands the weight of its cultural identity and pop culture relevance without being burdened by it. Its black identity is rooted in the film's text and explored while celebrating the superhero tropes.

Fittingly, the film's themes are driven by Wakanda's relationship with the outer world. Wakanda is a fantasy land where black and indigenous cultures were allowed to evolve without colonization. Hence, Wakanda is a sombre mirror of the United States thematically.

The film explores this privilege while justifying the responsibility that comes with it. T'Challa is a piece with other Ryan Coogler characters like Apollo Creed that have to reckon with their father's legacy and their mistakes.

However, Black Panther is not without its shortcomings. It conveys elements of the CIA propaganda with its heroic white CIA character standing up against a radicalized militant black man. The optics certainly don't look good.

Black Panther, at times, rails against its own limitations. Killmonger is a well-realized character, built on hatred and Black discrimination. However, his radicalness is shown to be a problem, turning him into a genocidal maniac.

This oversimplifies the narrative and strips the film of its nuance. It conveys the conservativism at the heart of the superhero genre. However, Black Panther, despite its missteps, is a refreshing MCU piece that celebrates collectivism.

Technically, the direction of Black Panther establishes an Afrofuturist tone with sincerity. Its cinematography establishes subjective framing, a saturated color palette, and tracking shots.

The acting conveys layers, physicality, and chemistry. While at times lethargic in its pacing, its editing provides structure to the narrative. Its score synthesized traditional African themes with hip-hop music and orchestral instruments.

Futuristic, organic high tech sounds, ambiance, talking drums, and tambin define the propulsive soundscape. Its production design is a highlight with traditional African costumes and Afrofuturist worldbuilding.

Its casting combines starpower, diversity, and well-fit. Its effects contribute to the worldbuilding of Wakanda; however, at times, it looks murky and eschews realism. Overall, Black Panther is technically proficient and one of the better MCU films.
