Barbie is an examination of feminist themes wrapped with layered satire and self-awareness. Its existential conflict is nuanced and well articulated. There are themes of feminism, patriarchy, capitalism, life, death, gender inequality, self-worth, self-importance, and wisdom. It has sharp dialogue, witty jokes, self-aware protagonists, and biting social commentary.
The dynamic acting reveals layers, exaggerated physicality, self-awareness, chemistry, range, and whimsicality. There is setup/payoff, heightened emotions, sincere vulnerability, and a loving homage to classics. However, these themes aren't as well explored as they get distracted by their flimsiness and rushed pacing leading to a satisfying albeit rushed conclusion.
Barbie technically is a force to be reckoned with. Its lack of versamilitude allows for colorful and rich worlds taking homage to classic musical films and historical fantasies. The cinematography uses movement, colorful lighting, focus, and mounts. Its editing adds quick cutting, match cuts, pacing, etc. Its production design is theatrical, immersive, and vibrant.
.Its music offers reimagined needle drops and catchy original songs. The effects create a distinct yet vibrant aesthetic. The sound uses stings, narration, emphasis, and muffling. Ultimately Barbie's mixture of style, energy, coordination, and self-assured confidence makes it a big extravaganza.
